UA Regents approve indigenous studies Ph.D., improvement projects

The University of Alaska Board of Regents wrapped up a two-day meeting at Prince William Sound Community College Thursday after approving a new Ph.D. program in indigenous studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, among other action items.

The indigenous studies Ph.D. was developed in collaboration with several Alaska Native groups. One of its goals is to help address a shortage of Alaska Natives with advanced degrees; another is to advance knowledge and scholarship on subjects important to Alaska Native people and communities.

Anchorage school bonds fail

Voters in Anchorage soundly rejected a pair of school bonds during this week’s municipal election.

The two bonds would have given the school district nearly $100 million to renovate and repair decaying infrastructure.

Juneau to host Russian Olympiad for first time

For the first time, Juneau will host the statewide Olympiad of Spoken Russian.

The Juneau Empire reported on the competition, put on by the America Council of Teachers of Russian, which will take place this Thursday at the University of Alaska Southeast.

Alaska Education Earmarks

Earlier this morning, President Barack Obama signed the $410 billion omnibus bill, funding the government’s agencies for another year.

Before he signed it, the president remarked that it was an imperfect bill, mostly because of all of the earmarks put in by various senators and representatives.

University of Alaska offers summer research academy for middle and high school students

The University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Natural Science and Mathematics is accepting applications for the Alaska Summer Research Academy, which is scheduled for July 20-31.

New York Life pledges $450,000 for ASRA, RAHI

A three-year $450,000 donation from New York Life will support the Alaska Summer Research Academy and the Rural Alaska Honors Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

Both programs are geared for Alaska high school students. Introduced in 2001, ASRA provides an intensive, two-week residential learning experience for middle and high school students with an interest in science, engineering or liberal arts. RAHI is a bridging program that helps ease the academic and social transition between high school and college.  RAHI students live on the Fairbanks campus for six weeks in the summer, taking courses and experiencing life in a college setting while earning between 7 and 10 college credits for their work.
