Two Alaska Students Receive National Merit Scholarships
Two Alaska students are among the first group of winners in the 2009 National Merit Scholarship Program. They will receive corporate-sponsored scholarships.
The Alaska winners are Carly Bond of South Anchorage High School (a Chevron scholarship) and Stacy Wheeler of West Anchorage High School (a BP scholarship).
To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists had to fulfill requirements to advance to Finalist standing. In addition to submitting a detailed scholarship application, which included an essay describing activities, interests, and goals, Semifinalists had to have an outstanding academic record; be endorsed and recommended by a school official; and earn SAT scores that confirmed their qualifying test performance.
The National Merit Scholarship Program includes a variety of scholarships and announces winners periodically through the spring and summer. See http://www.nationalmerit.org
